Old Government House

One of Queensland's most important heritage buildings, Old Government House was the original seat of power and social hub of colonial Queensland, and the official residence of the Governors of Queensland up until 1910. Now over 150-years-old, the original sandstone façade is complemented by a thoughtfully-restored classic interior, while surrounding lawns add a distinctive charm and serenity to the grand old building. We recommend the services of our preferred caterers for events at Old Government House.

With multiple indoor and outdoor spaces, The House is perfectly suited to events requiring an element of sophistication and refinement.

History and heritage

Old Government House was the hub of colonial life in the early days of Brisbane. Constructed between 1860 and 1862, shortly after Queensland achieved separation from New South Wales, the House was Queensland's first public building. A rare surviving example of the domestic work of Queensland's first Colonial Architect Charles Tiffin, the House was both a private residence and official state office for Governor Bowen, the colony's first governor, and continued to be the home of Queensland's governors until 1910.

In March 1978, Old Government House became the first building to be protected by Queensland heritage legislation.

When you choose Old Government House, you and your guests become a part of Brisbane's rich social history and play a part in keeping the lively heritage of the House thriving for many more generations to come.
